Math of the Expanding Universe — NASA JPL lessonScience · Physics · Grades 9–12Lesson plan

In this activity, students will learn about the expanding universe and the redshift of lightwaves. They will then calculate the redshift of a supernova, determine its velocity relative to Earth, and find the distance to that object. Materials Wide elastic bands (1 inch wide and 3-6 inches long) OR wide rubber bands cut into strips (one per group or one for class demo) Felt-tip pen Ruler with millimeter markings Spectral redshift worksheet - Download DOCX | View on Google Docs (Optional) deflate
